The question to "when to do it". All I can say is that you'll know. Look at the quality of life your dog has now. If it is still wagging their tail, eating, going potty, or in severe pain, then it isn't time yet. I had to put two dogs down last year, just a week apart from each other. The first was a senior hospice care pug that I took in from a rescue to give her a home and some love for the remaining days she had. Dealt with her seizures, medically, for 5 months before she started having them all the time. The second was our 13 yr old shihtzu that we had since she was a pup. For months I cooked up meals trying to entice her to eat. When she was down to 5 lbs, (she was only 8 lbs at her heaviest) she finally looked to us to help her cross the bridge. As tough as the decision is to make, they will let you know so that you know you're doing the right thing. With the costs of euthanizing and cremation.......best to call different vets and get prices. It will all depend on their weight.
