Does a ****er spaniel sound like the right breed for me? - 6/18/2008 11:39:14 PM

I recently fell in love with my parents' ****er spaniel, and am considering getting one. I live in an apartment (825 sq ft), and I want a sort of lapdog, though not totally lazy. I like to play too, just not all the time. If I wasn't getting a ****er, I'd prefer a more low-maintenance breed. I have no idea how much it costs to have them groomed. (Any info on this would be appreciated.) I'd like a small-medium dog. The only reason I'm avoiding small dogs is that they're too barky. My parents' ****er only barked when there was actually someone at the door, and only for a minute or so. This is ideal. I want an obedient, very affectionate, and loyal dog who would be relatively easy to train. I would probably have to put him in a crate sometimes, so a dog who would adjust well to a crate. Does a ****er spaniel sound like a good match for me?

Hi, I adopted an American ****er Spaniel eight months ago from a shelter. He is of average size making apartment living very appropriate. The ****er spaniel is very devoted, a loving and sweet natured breed in general, however, does have some anxiety issues especially if you may be travelling or working long hours. This type of breed needs a constant, consistent home life with a decent amount of exercise otherwise they can be prone to behavior problems (i.e. chewing, digging holes, etc.). If this sounds like a breed that you can committ 100% to, then the ****er spaniel is a life long true companion. As for grooming (I groom), the ****er is of the longer haired coat types requiring at least twice weekly a good brushing to avoid knots and at least once monthly a trimming to maintain the look of the breed. Nails should be trimmed every four to six weeks depending on how quickly they grow. Depending on where you live, grooming may cost anywhere from $40.00 and up.
