Defecation problems - 9/8/2006 9:14:36 AM

My cat is approximately 7 years old and has never had a problem using his litterbox; however, in the past few months I have noticed that most times after he finishes defecating he will take the time to bury it but then runs away from the box to immediately find a spot on the carpet to drag his behind as if he feels it isn't clean.  I have even spotted him get in and out of the litter box a couple times, let loose a few turds and then immediately hit the carpet to drag himself, leaving behind another turd as if he couldn't squeeze it out on his own.

I have found both smears and actual pieces on the floor, and am wondering if this could be 1. a medical problem, and 2. something I can teach him to not do - i.e., is my anger at him dragging himself on the floor as justified as it would be in the case of him not using the litterbox at all?  I have yelled "NO!" loudly to dissuade him, and he will instantly stop as if he knows it is wrong, yet this does not stop him the next time, as he will openly sit on the floor right in front of me and begin dragging once again.  Please someone advise me, as I am at my wit's end and do not want to resort to giving him away.

It is a medical problem!  Take him to the vet!

I too have a cat that does this very same thing. He is not quite a year old yet. But he does not leave anything behind and he just dose it randumly. Like once in awhile.

If they do it alot, it could mean they have worms.

My cat is twelve years old.  She has always used her litterbox until the last year.

She always urinates in the box, but now steps out and poops next to the box.  Why would she do this?

Sometimes cats like to have more than one litter box.
But I wonder if she is getting older, maybe she doesn't like standing in the litter anymore.  Or maybe she is constipated and it takes her longer, so she gets out.  I know it sounds stupid, but I have a very old cat (15+) who does the same thing, but not every time.  I've watched her and i think she gets sick of standing there so she gets out.
Is her stool normal?  Did anything change in the last year?  Like litter, her food, her health?
