My family and I live on a farm which is cut in two by a very main road. A female stray has been living in one of the barns for the last few years, and every year she has a litter or two of kittens. This is not good for several reasons, predominantly because nearly every one of these young cats will meet their end under someone's wheels between the ages of 6 months and 2 years, an interval which still allows for a third generation, which leads to a fourth, etc. It is impossible to keep a half feral cat from going where he or she pleases (across the road). My dilemma is that we simply cannot afford to have 4+ cats surgically sterilized, much less 10+. Is there an alternative which would not involve shelling out hundreds of dollars to keep our current population from passing on the family curse? A Cayuga County Resident.
Maybe the local shelter will help you with spaying and neutering. Not sure if that will stop them from getting hit by cars but will at least reduce the population.
