Have him checked by a vet to make sure he doesn't have any medical problems. Next buy a bellyband and put it on him when you're not home. Thirdly....Buy a book about potty training and start with square one with him.
If you're not completely cleaning the spots where he's peeing, he'll continue to mark those spots. And I guarantee you that if it's on carpeting then it's all the way down to the matting and the wood underneath that carpet. It'll also go down your walls behind your baseboards and into the cracks of the floor there.
If he's been doing it for 6 yrs now then most likely that pee is in deep into everything.
You're going to have to act like you just got a puppy and you're beginning potty training.
If I can take in a dog that was in a puppymill cage for 10 yrs and train her to potty outside then anyone can do this.

Do a google search on them and you'll see what i'm talking about. A bellyband is a wide strip of material with velcro to secure it onto the dog. It wraps around the mid section and covers the penis.
Use this, with a feminine pad, so that when he lifts his leg he's not doing anything but pee on the pad and not your furniture or walls.

She is a female not a male and I have been putting diapers on her at night...but what are the odds she will eventually get it and not go in the house?

I have a 6 year old mini poodle that knows how to go outside,(we have a doggie door) but chooses to pee inside when we are not around. She has never been crated and I don't believe in crating but I am at my wits ends as to what to do to force her to go outside. Any advice or suggestions are welcome.
